Three (3) bound volumes of the English Theater publication The Play Pictorial, circa 1910, from the Max Factor Collection.

We are pleased to present three (3) bound volumes of The Play Pictorial, a monthly English Theater Publication. These volumes date to the early 1900's and were part of the Max Factor Company Collection at the Max Factor Museum in Hollywood, California.

The Max Factor Company was founded in 1909 and was an early pioneer in Stage and Film Make-up. They maintained a museum collection for many years. The company was sold to Procter & Gamble in 1991 which sold the museum (and Max Factor building in Hollywood) in 1996. The building reopened in 2002 as The Hollywood History Museum. The Max Factor collection of The Play Pictorial was sold by the museum during the 2010-2011 time period. We now own them and are pleased to offer these one-of-a-kind volumes for your consideration.

Each volume includes six issues of The Play Pictorial monthly magazine. The magazine is noteworthy for the interesting pictures it includes, most showing scenes from various West End productions of the time. Unlike typical period photographs, the pictures in the magazine show animated actors and actresses, mostly in costume. There are also sketches, song scores, portraits, and occasional colored plates. The material is interesting not only for the great theatrical content, but also for the view it provides of life in the early 1900's.

We have the entire collection which consists of twenty-one (21) volumes in all. We are listing the entire collection in small groupings (see our other listings for additional groups). You will receive the following volumes in this lot:

Volume XVII: Includes magazine issues from No. 100 to No. 105. Includes plays:

Eccentric Lord Comberdene

Jack and the Beanstalk

A Waltz Dream

The Quaker Girl

Passers By

Volume XVIII: Includes magazine issues from No. 106 to No. 111. Includes plays:

The Count of Luxembourg

The Dramatic Ballet

Baby Mine

Romeo and Juliet

Volume XIX: Includes magazine issues from No. 112 to No. 117. Includes plays:

The Hope

The Mousme

Fanny's First Play

The Glad Eye

Each volume measures 11-7/8 inches high by 9 inches wide, and is approximately 3/4 inch thick, weighing about 2-1/4 pounds.

Condition: All volumes have a sticker towards the bottom of the spine that lists the volume number. Covers show some dirt and have corner bumps and minor to moderate edge wear. Interior pages have a Max Factor property stamp on occasional pages. Some volumes have minor cracks to the binding, but without any loose pages. Endpages tend to show moderate foxing. Interior glossy pages generally show little wear and are unmarked. Overall, volumes are in good to very good condition (see pictures).

This is an exceptional collection of turn-of-the-century Theater pictures and related content, once owned by the renowned Max Factor Company, the pioneer of Theatrical Make-up. The books would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
