Vintage ROYAL CURRIER & IVES CERAMIC CUP & SAUCER
Blue US Americana American
A lot of cup & saucer sets
from Royal's Currier & Ives Blue Collection, featuring 19th
Century Americana themed transfer pattern.
For Americans, there are few pieces
of art that strike home like the Americana portrayed in Currier
& Ives art. This lot of cup & saucer sets we have here
certainly continues the tradition, with each plate done with
a beautiful blue and white depiction of aspects of 19 Century
life in America. Each saucer features a stunning riverboat depiction
while the sides of the cups are covered with a wagon, being
pulled by horses at full gallop.
Currier and Ives was a successful American
printmaking firm headed by Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) and
James Merritt Ives (1824–1895). Based in New York City from
1834–1907, the prolific firm produced prints from paintings
by fine artists as black and white lithographs that were hand
colored. Produced with Royal Porcelain, these prints were brought
to the dinner table as cups, saucers, platters, plates, and
The saucers are identically matched,
each measuring 6 inches in diameter. The cups are all 3 1/2
inches at the lip, 2 inches tall and have a base of 2 inches.
Together, the set weighs 5 pounds, 11 ounces.
All seven of the cups seem to be in
good to very good condition. None has any cracks, chips, or
crazing. 6 of the saucers are in similarly good condition, though
one has a noticeable chip on its edge (see photo).
This lot of plates is a great expansion
to your kitchen and would look great at any dinner or get together.
