PEWTER WATER BOTTLE/FLASK Antique OCTAGONAL CANNISTER Schraubflasche GERMANY
An antique Pewter Water Bottle believed to originate in Germany.
We are pleased to present this antique Pewter Water Bottle for your consideration. It is eight-sided (octagonal), a bit different than the more common six-sided pieces. The lid has a large ring attached to it, and the front has a monogram that reads Y R.
The Water Bottle measures 9 inches high (10-1/2 inches with the ring vertical), while the base measures 4-5/8 inches across. Quite heavy, the piece weighs 3 pounds 3 ounces. Two hallmarks or maker marks are found on the lid (see close up picture). One shows two crossed shovels or spades, with the number 5 visible above the junction. The other mark is more difficult to make out, and we do not know its source. The underside of the Bottle has a number that looks like 1606, followed below by the letter S. There is also a hand scratched number 2175, of unknown significance.
Surface wear is age appropriate, and most surfaces are covered with fine scratches. Edges, especially on the lid, show bumps. One significant bump is noticed on the underside, but it is small in area. The lid unscrews without difficulty, and tightens to a secure seal. There are no repairs or significant damage, and we rate the overall condition as very good.
This is an old well-constructed Pewter piece. It would make a wonderful addition to any antique Pewter collection!
