Flow Blue ceramics, with softly flowing
transfer-printed decorations on durable, white ceramics, were
created by English potters in the second quarter of the nineteenth
century and were promptly introduced to the world market. Flow
Blue wares were particularly popular in the American market
by 1840 and continued to be produced in England into the first
quarter of the twentieth century. This lot, dating from the
1880s, are prime examples of this style wiht their scalloped
edges and beautiful rose and garland patterns, all done in blue
Lot includes 3 10-inch dinner plates,
4 9-inch dinner plates, and 3 8-inch lunch plates. Total weight
for the lot is 8 1/2 pounds.
As can be expected with pieces of
this age, there is crazing. Some of the plates have minor chips
on the bottom outer edges. Aside from the crazing, there are
no cracks or chips on the plate faces, and the colors are vibrant.
This lot would make a valuable addition
for anyone who collects Newport Pottery pieces or Flow Blue
ceramics. Their brilliant colors would make them a great shelf
decoration for a living room, dining room, or office.
