Mixed Lot Zaire, Congo African Folk Art Cup and Malachite
Mixed lot that includes folk art
from Zaire (Congo) Africa, Hand carved & signed wooden chalice,
and a string of Malachite round beads.
We are very happy to be able to offer
this 2 piece mixed lot of African folk art.
The first item in this lot is a hand
carved chalice or cup, the cup has a bowl sitting atop a carved
head. There is a ring handle carved into the back of the head.
This little cup is signed and dated 1965 by the artist, something
that we wish occurred more often with folk art from Africa.
Condition- The overall condition of this cup is very good. But
we are pretty confident that this cup was intended for display
use only, as a small hole was drilled about midway from the
lip and the bottom. There is also a 7/16 inch davit at the bottom
of the cup, located above the right eye of the head carving.
The second item is a beautiful hand
knotted string of large Malachite beads, these beads, on average
are approximately 3/8 inches in diameter. There are 71 beads
in the strand, and 22 of the beads are either chipped or fractured
(see pictures for examples) but the remaining beads are impressive
If you love and collect the folk art
of the rich cultures and peoples of Africa, then this mask will
make a wonderful addition to your collection.
