Vintage MAJOLICA French Farmhouse Harvest Theme Tall Table
Vintage Majolica French farmhouse
tall table lamp, garden harvest of vegetables.
We are very pleased to offer for your
consideration this wonderful Majolica Table lamp.
Majolica was first introduced by Minton
& Company (also, Minton Ltd.) at London’s Crystals Palace Exhibition
of 1851. This was, of course, a time when all aspects of Victoriana
were popular, including massive volumes of tableware for every
imaginable mealtime desire. Modeled in relief, early Minton
designs focused on Renaissance motifs, such as lions, rams,
and mythological figures. First called “Palissy ware,” majolica
was named for a French Renaissance potter, Bernard Palissy,
whose success had been with a rustic style of pottery colored
in a naturalistic manner that included such forms as snakes,
lizards and shellfish. The name that stuck, however, was majolica.
This term had its roots in the name of the Spanish island, Majorca
(or “Maiorca”), which was a port for similar glazed wares being
sent from Spain to Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries. The
Victorian majolica “revival” prompted a frenzy. The pottery
designs grew to dovetail with the Victorian interest in the
natural sciences; pieces featured butterflies, insects, flowers,
leaves, fruit, shells, animals and fish.
This design of this wonderful lamp
follows the late Victorian practice of using fruits and vegetables
as the inspiration for the pieces created. This lamp is piled
high with the fruits of a garden harvest. The bounty includes,
Onions, large Garlic cloves, leeks, Potatoes, Eggplant, Artichokes,
and Tomatoes, accented with small flower blossoms and leafs.
All these beautiful renditions of vegetables are piled high
into a plan white bowl, set onto an ornate painted metal base.
The lamp is a tall one, it measures
33 inches from the finial to the bottom base. The widest diameter
of the lamp is approximately 9 inches. The base measures 6 5/8
inches in diameter. The lamp weighs 13 pounds. The lamp is made
from a low fire white clay body.
Condition- This lamp is in very good
condition. There are no chips, or cracks in the ceramic section
of the lamp. The metal base could use some cleaning. The lamp
has been tested and we suggest installing a new plug. This lamp
is offered without a shade. This give you the opportunity to
pick a shade that will work well with both the lamp and your
existing color scheme.
This lamp would look fantastic in
a large French country style kitchen. It is a wonderful reminder
of the bounty and sustenance that mother nature provides.
