FRANK ZIMMERER Aquarius ROBERT H BRACKENRIDGE Arts&Crafts SCRAPBOOK COVER c.1931
An unusual Arts & Crafts Scrapbook Cover with a Winged Ox, circa 1931.
We are pleased to present this c.1931+ Scrapbook or Portfolio Cover for your consideration. A very unusual piece, it features a hand chased board front cover with a Winged Ox design, complete with real metal studs. The cover has a label on the inside with the names Robert H. Brackenridge and Frank Zimmerer, two artists who shared a studio on Olvera Street in Los Angeles starting in 1931. The label also says Aquarius, possibly their business or studio name (see pictures).
A substantial piece, the cover weighs 4 pounds 4 ounces. It has overall dimensions of 16-1/2 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 1-1/4 inches deep (measured at the spine). The board on the front measures 14-1/2 inches high and 12 inches wide. It is surrounded by something like a hard surfaced cardboard or paper mache - you can see some of the underlying material in picture 3 at the corner where the outer painted surface has worn away. On the inside, there are a few full and partial sheets of heavy stock yellow and orange paper, but without any contents. The insides of the covers have an abstract decoration.
The condition of the piece is good to very good. The Winged Ox has a few chips to its paint, but is in good shape overall, with all metal studs intact. The covering over the spine and binding is dried and flaky, appearing to be 75 percent intact or better. The cover shows edge and corner wear, especially at the lower right corner. All pictures show the actual piece you will receive.
