CAMDEN'S COMPLIMENT TO WALT WHITMAN David McKay 1889 1st FIRST EDITION Rare Book
First Edition of Camden's Compliment to Walt Whitman, featured on the Baggage Battles TV show.
We are pleased to present this first edition of Camden's Compliment to Walt Whitman for your consideration. It was published to memorialize Whitman's 70th birthday banquet on May 31, 1889, and it contains writings and greetings by notable locals, including Mark Twain. It was compiled by Whitman's brother-in-law Horace L. Traubel and published by David McKay in Philadelphia. The population of first editions is estimated at 200 copies, making this quite a rare item.
The Book was acquired by Laurence and Sally Martin, owners of Studio Antiques, on the Travel Channel hit reality TV show Baggage Battles. This was an item from the very first episode (season 1 episode 1) from an auction held at Miami International Airport. The Book was a featured item in the episode, and we've included a few clips from the show among our pictures. The episode first aired on April 11, 2012, and was simply titled "Miami".
The Book measures 8-1/2 inches high, 5-3/4 inches wide, and is 1/2 inch thick. It weighs 9.7 ounces. It has a clear plastic protective jacket, but the jacket is not taped or attached. Our pictures show the Book without the jacket in place.
There are some minor condition issues. There is a slight ripple visible near the center of the front cover, with a very slight bend noted to the volume overall. The binding has a crack near the front, but pages are still firmly attached (see picture 8 for side view, also visible in picture 2 and 3). There is a crease in the thin protective sheet over the plate at the beginning of the book. Some pencil markings are found inside the front cover (see picture 7). Page sizes and edges are irregular, but appear "as manufactured". There are slight bumps to the edges of the covers, and at the spine. No significant foxing, stains, or water marks are seen. Overall, the Book has held up well over the years, and we rate its condition as near fine.
This is a nice copy of a hard-to-find first edition. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
