An original example of 1850s to 1870s Victorian-era yarnwork. Outstanding condition, large size, in the original frame.

We are privileged to present this rare example of 19th century American yarnwork. Still in its original frame, the yarn stitch comes through in excellent condition with vibrant colors.

Yarnwork was a popular form of artistic expression, especially in England, starting around 1790 to the beginning of the 20th century. The most common subjects dealt with memorials, ships, and biblical events. Due to moisture, insect infestations, and dry rot, most examples of this fine art form did not survive over the years.

This piece we have here is notable for several reasons. First, it remains in its original frame, and as such, is remarkably well preserved from the elements. Second, it is an American piece, very rare when one considers 80% of yarnwork was British in origin. This piece is also substantially larger than most surviving pieces.

The theme of this yarnwork is definitely biblical. The exact time is difficult to tell. Observations have included King Solomon and possibly the finding of baby Moses. Each of the subjects is different. The man on the left seems to be soldier of some kind, while the man in the middle displays what might be a Jewish baby blanket and is wearing a kippa or yarmulke.

While no baby is noted in the piece, all the subjects seem to be congregating around the center blankets, and a baby's foot can clearly be seen poking out of the blankets in the lower center of the picture.

This yarnwork framed is 43 1/2 inches long by 29 inches high. Weight is 18 pounds.

This framed yarnwork dates from the late 19th Century, and as such the original frame is flaked around the corners and rubbed off in the middle. This frame, however, has preserved the yarnwork in truly outstanding condition. The colors are bright and the knitwork is tight and unafraid. A truly well-preserved piece of artwork.

For collectors, this yarnwork is a truly rare and unique find. Its size, condition, and origin make it something that does not become available very often, if ever.
