We are very pleased to be able to offer for your consideration another treasure our bosses, Sally & Laurence Martin have returned with while shooting an episode of the Travel Channels TV show Baggage Battles.
This time the Baggage Battles show had Sally & Laurence travel to New Jersey to attend an auction. This wonderful antique basket was one of the items they returned home with. This basket my have served as a large gathering basket on some farm from the region. It is now a wonderful example of American Arts & Crafts. The basket is a woven wooden splint, construction, possibly of Ash, a favorite wood well suited to the purpose of making woven baskets.
This is a large gathering basket, approximately 21 inches in diameter, and on average 5 - 5 3/4 inches tall at the lip. This basket weighs 2.25 pounds.
Condition- There are a few issues with this basket, It has warped over the years resulting in a lip of uneven height, and one side of the basket has a bit more of a curve in it's side than the other. There are also some broken spider stake splints, as well as some broken bottom stitching. See photographs provided.
This basket, though far past is useful days, is a very beautiful example of the folk craft, and hand work of much earlier times. It will make a wonderful addition to any collection of early American Arts & Crafts pieces.
