Antique CIVIL WAR ENVELOPES Loyal States Union Indiana Vermont
State Seal Liberty Old Glory
A pair of original Civil War envelopes,
featuring Union loyalist states Indiana and Vermont.
Add some distinction to your Civil
War collection with this pair of Civil War era envelopes. Both
are done in the Loyal States template. One is the hard to find
Indiana state and the other Vermont. Both envelopes sport their
respective state seals and feature Lady Liberty holding the
American Flag. Both these envelopes were produced by Reagles
& Company of New York.
Publication of Civil War envelopes began as
early as the mid-1850's, when north-south divisions began to
take shape, but ended prior to the war's conclusion because
most believed that it was too indulgent and expensive to continue
production in a time of war. These Civil War envelopes, some
of which have been called early versions of pictorial postcards,
were very popular with collectors of patriotic propaganda.
Both of these envelopes are identical
in shape, measuring 5 1/2 X 3 1/4 inches. In their protective
plastic, they weigh a combined 1 ounce.
Both envelopes are sealed, and we
do not believe there is any content in either one. Each card
has a small pin hole in its upper right hand corner, possibly
having been kept on a posterboard or something similar. The
Indiana envelope has two small holes in its bottom front, though
neither one of these affects the images in the least.
The Vermont envelope has sustained
water damage, and this is noticeable from the front and especially
the back. This does not affect the presentability of the images
on the front of the envelope.
This pair of patriotic envelopes will
make great collectors items for any Civil War buff!
