1938 Churchman's Cigarettes BOXING CARD Jack Dempsey

An original 1938 Churchman's Cigarette trading card featuring Jack Dempsey. Card is number 12 of the original series.

We present this original 1938 Jack Dempsey cigarette card number 12 of the series found in cigarette packs from Churchman's cigarettes.

The first cigarette packets were very fragile and so a thick card was inserted to stiffen them. During a period considered by many to be one of the most innovative in history, an enterprising US businessman decided to print a colorful advertisement on the "stiffener" card.

The evolution of the cigarette card was driven by the highly competitive and creative tobacco markets. Soon cards were issued on subjects appealing to smokers, such as glamorous actresses, world events, and sports. Firms soon realized that they could strengthen customer loyalty by issuing sets of beautifully illustrated and informative cards.

William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey ("The Manassa Mauler") (June 24, 1895 – May 31, 1983) was an American boxer who held the world heavyweight title from 1919 to 1926. Dempsey's aggressive style and exceptional punching power made him one of the most popular boxers in history. Many of his fights set financial and attendance records, including the first million dollar gate. He is listed #10 on The Ring's list of all-time heavyweights and #7 among its Top 100 Greatest Punchers. He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

This cigarette card measures 2 5/8 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide.

Dating from 1938, this card has a condition of VG. The corners have slight blunts and we believe the card has darkened over the years. There is also a slight bubble on the front, located just to the right of Dempsey's knee. Despite this, the card has not lost most of its gloss and the images and print on the front and back are quite clear.

For collectors of early cigarette cards, the number 12 Jack Dempsey would make a valuable addition, not to mention a great conversation piece that can only increase in value.
